Bessou means

“Home Away From Home”

Bessou began in 2016 as a cozy Japanese restaurant in Downtown Manhattan, inspired by founder Maiko Kyogoku’s desire to share the soulful, everyday flavors she grew up with as a Japanese American in New York City. What started as a personal love letter to home cooking quickly became a beloved neighborhood gem, earning critical acclaim from The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out for its creative take on Japanese comfort food and warm spirit.

While the format has evolved, our heart hasn’t changed. Bessou is still about comfort, connection, and the simple joy of food that feels like home—wherever you are.

Today, Bessou is no longer just a restaurant. It’s a dynamic, multi-channel food brand bringing Japanese flavors to more people in more ways—through our quick counter restaurant at Pier 57, our upcoming location at JFK Terminal 4, and a growing retail line that includes Pom Pom Popcorn and Japanese pantry essentials on shelves nationwide.
